Bellville at a glance
Bellville: Located in the peaceful Northern Suburbs, on the line from Cape Town to Stellenbosch and Paarl, the residential suburb of Bellville (formerly known as the 12 Mile post as a result of its proximity to the City Centre) was originally founded as a railway station. Spanning over 18.99 square miles, this residential and commercial district has become a significant part of the Western Cape’s commercial and residential landscape.
Although the area was founded in the province’s early development years, it was officially established as a residential and commercial district in 1861 after being named after the surveyor general, Charles Bell. Its original name speaks volumes about the change that has occurred in the area and the landscape of Bellville real estate, but as the city grows and expands northward, the historical significance of the suburb is being replaced by the areas current reputation as a desirable hub of residential and commercial activity.
Due to its location north of the city, Bellville grew organically in a space where land was cheaper and more plentiful. As a result of this Bellville houses are generally larger when compared with their southern neighbours. This makes Bellville real estate more appealing to younger families and first time buyers. Many local and international companies are moving their head-offices to Bellville and Durbanville areas as city centre property prices become uncompetitive. Consequently, the area’s commercial growth is expanding at a rapid pace.
Popular attractions and amenities in the area include the sprawling Tygervalley Shopping Centre (one of Cape Town’s largest shopping malls offering recreational activities, restaurants, boutiques and shops), the spectacular 18-hole Bellville Golf Course in the sheltered valleys of the Northern Suburbs, the 250 metre, multi-purpose Bellville Velodrome (a popular concert venue), as well as a number of world class medical and educational facilities including the Karl Bremer Hospital and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).
Offering an exquisite diversity of architectural styles and characteristics, Bellville property is a rapidly changing suburb and has become a sought after residential area amongst younger families seeking large, affordable houses in a neighbourhood with a strong sporting and academic environment. Property in Bellville ranges from spacious freestanding homes in shaded streets, modernised sectional titles units and security complexes, vacant land overlooking the verdant winelands of Durbanville and multi-purpose commercial properties.
